Groundhogs are persistent and tricky. In my experience freshly placed melon and lettuce have worked well as bait. To protect your plants you might try fencing with chicken wire. The fencing should run underground bent outward for a foot or more so that they can't burrow under the fence. Some gardeners also report success with pepper-based repellent sprays and with the commercially produced repellent sprays such as "GetAway". You may have to try all these controls at once to either capture or repel the groundhog. Good luck with your project.
