ok, so let's say soil is the problem. If that is the case, then this will be a pathetic season for these flowers. 3 of these bushes I wanted to move to containers at the end of the season. Doesn't it make sense to go ahead and move them now, nurse them through the summer but also give them good drainage this year so that they can be ready for the future, or should I wait?

It makes perfect sense to me. Go ahead and transplant them into your containers. I hope they thrive!
