|You may be able to keep it at the same height if you pinch out the growing tips of each branch. This will force growth towards the center of the plant. Just keep pinching as new growth threatens to make it taller or wider. If you try sprouting an avocado seed again, you can begin pinching out the tips of the top and the branches when the plant is about 12" high. You'll end up with a bush rather than a tree but it will take many years for it to reach 4' in height.
