To keep your mums from getting spindly you can lightly shear them every 2-3 weeks from spring until mid-July, or you can simply pinch out the tips of each stem every 2-3 weeks. Stop pinching in mid to late July and the plants will begin to develop flower buds for the late summer/fall flower display. I usually pinch the stem tips back in April, allow new growth to reach 3-4 inches and then pinch again. Repeat this until mid July and then stop pinching. When the flower buds develop, remove all but the largest center bud. You'll have fewer flowers, but the flowers will be larger. Enjoy your garden!
