Rat snakes are non-venomous snakes and therefore aren't considered dangerous, but if they freak you out, the absolute BEST thing you can do is keep wood piles, rocks, etc away from the house/shed/garden and don't make a home for rodents, grasshoppers and frogs because their predators (rat snakes) will follow. If you have a resident rat snake, he's obviously finding things to eat. You can try a product called Snake Away which can help repel the snakes. Best wishes with your landscape!
