There are European and American cultivars, and most people think the European kinds are sweeter and more flavorful than their American counterparts. Gooseberries are hardy to -25F degrees, grow best in full sunshine but will tolerate some afternoon shade, and can live 15-25 years. Try 'Leepared' or 'Whitesmith' for the sweetest fruit, or 'Hinnomaki Yellow' for an unusual, but outstandingly flavorful berry.
