why do the leaves get brown around the edges?

The usual cause of browning leaf margins is moisture stress - wide swings between wet soil and dry soil. Try keeping the soil consistently moist. There's an off chance that mites may be causing the problem. Inspect the undersides of the leaves, with a magnifying glass if necessary, to see if you can detect the tiny insects or the webbing they leave behind. Best wishes with your hydrangea.
