Boxwoods are traditionally pruned in the early spring, just as new growth begins. You can prune your shrubs back by a few inches without harm and if you need to take off more, you can safely remove one-third of the live growth. If you need to reduce the height and width more than that, plan on pruning one third off this year and another third off next spring. Best wishes with your boxwoods.
