Slugs and snails are the most common hosta pests and you can control them with baits. Because you have a dog you'll want to choose an iron based product such as Sluggo. The bait is scattered around the plants and is harmless to people, pets and wildlife. Any product not consumed by the slugs or snails breaks down into simple iron which is absorbed by the earth. Apply according to label directions.
