You can keep your petunias thick and bushy and full of flowers by pinching off the spent flowers along with some of the stem. In the summertime this might mean deadheading on a daily basis. Keeping those spent flowers pinched off before they can develop seeds will prompt new growth and lots of new flowers - and thick, bushy plants. Best wishes with your garden!
