There are lots of roses in the yard where we just moved to. I do not know what fertilizers/sistemics have been used. Is it safe to plant edibles in the ground?

Since you're unsure what might have been applied to the soil, why not grow your veggies in containers this year? You can build inexpensive planters and fill them with pre packaged topsoil, or plant your veggies in plastic containers. This way you can be sure the soil isn't tainted. Best wishes with your garden!
