I would like to know what hedges or shrubs would be best to plant along a busy road. I am most concerned about damage from plowed snow and road salt or calcium. We would prefer an evergreen.

The University of Minnesota has published some in-depth information about salt tolerance in landscape plants. (http://www.mes.umn.edu/Documen...) Unfortunately, many of the most desirable plants are quite intolerant of salt. You might find that a better long term solution is to use a combination of a protective fence and plantings set back a bit from the road. Also, be sure to check for local restrictions and limitations on roadside plantings and fences first because often setback and right of way requirements are surprisingly broad.
