My plant started to wilt and harden. It's in 6+ hours of sun and has good drainage.

Balloon flower grows well in full sun, in rich moist soil. The only problem it might encounter is if it is planted too deeply. If your transplanted your balloon flower plant into your garden this season, and you're watering it regularly, it has full sun and good drainage, perhaps you planted it deeper than it was growing in the nursery container. If so, the stem will rot. It sounds like your plant is beyond help if the stems are drying out. Wish I had something more encouraging to share with you.
