Water stress is probably what is causing the leaves to turn brown. Check to make sure your trees are getting adequate water (water deeply once a week). You may want to dig the dead tree out and check to make sure the roots are not soggy wet and/or the soil is not soggy or overly dry. Sorry about your tree!
