My father heard that stripping the leaves from the plant while it's growing makes for a better/quicker harvest of Brussel sprouts. Is this true?

Unless the leaves turn yellow (which sometimes happens with the lower leaves), they should not be stripped off the plant. The leaves, through the process of photosynthesis, convert the sun's energy into carbohydrates for the plant. This energy is transported down to the roots of the plant to help it grow. If you strip the healthy leaves from the plant, it won't get the energy it needs to develop and mature the sprouts. I'd just leave the leaves alone and let them do their jobs.
