Recently, we had a very hard rain, and my tomatoes on the plant have begun to turn brown-is this beacuse of the rain, too much sun, or something else?

Soggy soil from too much water, sunscald and even over maturity will cause the fruits to turn brown. Since it's early in the season, I'd remove the affected fruits and allow your plants to develop new tomatoes. As long as the plant itself is still healthy, any new fruit it develops should be just fine. Sorry about all the rain!
