|Mexican Bird of Paradise will become quite large as the root system matures and while you can trim it down in December - all the way down to ground level - it will return in March and grow rapidly when the weather gets hot. There's really no way to keep a mature plant from growing 6' tall and wide, or more. About the only way to have a smaller plant is to dig out some of the root system each winter so it has a smaller root system and fewer reserves. These are such gorgeous plants when in bloom it seems almost a shame to cut them back! But, it's an important part of controlling their size.
