Asparagus roots should grow stronger each year they are in the ground if you are careful not to harvest all the spears each year so that some of them can develop ferny foliage. The foliage is what replenishes the roots of the plants so they can develop more and larger spears in subsequent years. At 5 years of age you should be able to harvest spears for a 6-8 week period. Allow everything else to develop foliage to help replenish the roots. Each spring you can feed your plants with 10-20-10 fertilizer to help them with growth. Best wishes with your asparagus.
