The stem on which the faded flower is growing can be cut back by one third to one half. I just hold the spent flower in one hand and follow the stem down to a leaf node or where a set of leaves is growing and prune the stem about one quarter of an inch above that point. New flowering stems will appear just below the pruning cut. Hope this is descriptive enough! Best wishes with your butterfly bush.
