Sounds like your husband did you a favor. I don't see anything wrong with his method. Composted manure makes a fine mulch material. My only suggestion is that you brush the compost away from the bases of your plants. It can hold too much water against the stems and cause them to rot. It should be a simple task to move the compost an inch or so away from each plant. The compost will suppress weeds and as it breaks down over the years it will release nutrients into the soil. Enjoy your flower beds!
