Adequate watering is the key to redoing your lawn in the summertime. You can aerate (use a core aerator that removes plugs, spread a thin layer of sand or compost over the top) and then reseed. Grass seeds will sprout in about a week when temperatures are above 75F degrees. Keep the lawn moist until the grass is up and growing - this might mean watering every few hours every day. If you're up to the challenge, you can get the grass to grow and thrive. Best wishes with your lawn.
