would pine needles work as an appropriate mulch on my newly seeded lawn?

Instead of pine needles, which will break down slowly and might acidify the soil too much, how about using a thin layer of compost or shredded straw? While the straw will take some time to break down, it's relatively inert and won't change the soil's pH. Best wishes with your new lawn.
