|WE'RE GOING TO PLANT THE 2 TREES WE PURCHASED, SOME TIME THIS COMING WEEK. ONE IS THE DOGWOOD, THE OTHER A PURPLE LEAF PLUM. MY WIFE USUALLY PUTS A 5 GAL BUCKET OF WATER MIX OF MIRCLE GROW ON THE PLANTED BUSHES OR TREES SHE HAS PLANTED IN THE PAST. IS IT A GOOD IDEA AND IF SO ARE THEY ACID OR ALKALINE LOVING TREES. P.S. THE PLUM SEEMS TO BE DEER RESISTANCE WHILE THE DOGWOOD DOESN'T. THANK YOU

|I don't see anything wrong with your wife's practice of pouring a 5 gallon bucket of water plus Miracle Gro on newly planted trees. The water will help settle the soil and the diluted fertilizer will provide nutrients to the entire root system. Dogwoods typically like acidic soils; ornamental plum trees are quite adaptable to most garden soils. An acidified fertilizer such as Miracle Gro will be just fine for both trees. Deer do like dogwood trees so if deer are a problem in your landscape you may want to construct a physical barrier around your new tree by installing 3-4 stakes and securing chicken wire around the stakes. Keep the stakes a good 3-4 feet away from the trunk of the tree and be sure they are tall enough that a deer cannot reach it's head over the top of the wire and munch on the branches or leaves of your tree. Once the tree is taller, deer won't browse on the leaves. Good luck with your new trees.
