Adding mulch to the soil - Knowledgebase Question

I like the look of fresh mulch in the spring. Is it ok to work the old mulch into the soil? I normally use euclyptus mulch if that makes a difference.

It's absolutely okay to work mulch into the soil and apply a new layer every year. Eucalyptus mulch degrades more slowly than other types of mulches so you may want to rake out the old mulch every 3-4 years rather than incorporating it into your soil. You'll be able to tell whether or not the old mulch has decomposed by digging down into the soil. If it still looks like it did the year before, rake out the next layer of mulch rather than digging it into the soil.
