I have a huge tree in my front yard. Under the tree there is a dirt spot. Is it to late to plant seeds, or can I still purchase sod from home depot and lay that down?

Sod will give you an instant improvement so I'd install sod. It's difficult to get grass to grow in the shade so you may need to replace the sod every 3-4 years. Or, you can plant a drought tolerant, shade loving groundcover instead of sod. Try carpet bugle or vinca instead of turf and you won't have to keep replacing it. Best wishes with your landscape.
