I'm planning to have a garden for the first time in my life this next year and love tomatoes. I live in the Seattle area and would like to know which varieties will produce best in my area. The ones I plan to plant are Sungold, Red October and Sweet Tangerine. Will they do okay? Also, what type of fertilizer should I use?

Seattle summers are notoriously short, wet and cool. In order to harvest a crop of tomatoes, you'll need to plant varieties adapted to these conditions. You'll have good success with Burpee's 'Northern Exposure' and 'Sweet Tangerine', plus 'Oregon Spring', 'Santiam', or 'Siletz' from Territorial Seeds (PO Box 157, Cottage Grove, OR 97424-0061). Work 1/4 cup of organic fertilizer into the planting hole before planting, and side dress with compost when the plants flower, to promote the development of fruit. Keep your plants well watered by thoroughly soaking the soil once each week, and you should harvest a bounty of tomatoes by the end of the season.
