Vegetable matter usually decomposes within a year of being placed in the soil and I don't think it would have damaged the roots of your Yews, unless the vegetable matter had been treated with persistent herbicides. If the matter had affected your plants you would have seen problems on one side of the Yew as the first symptom. Yews appreciate well draining soils and regular watering. There may have been something going on with the root systems. Just to make sure, why not have the soil tested by Cornell or Rutgers?
