Hoop it up!

Posted by @Eric4home on
I was trying to think of an easier way to keep bloom-laden butterfly bushes from flopping over, and I came up with this idea.

When pruning back your butterfly bushes (best time is when forsythia is in bloom), slip a hula hoop over the entire plant and let it lie on the ground. After the new growth becomes heavy enough, lift it up and continue to do so until the desired effect is achieved.

Hula hoops come in a wide variety of colors, so you can use something festive, with stripes and sparkles, or something less noticeable, such as a solid green or black hoop. Most hoops are around 30” in diameter. If you need something larger, a length of ABS pipe with a single slip connector can be used. Colors will be limited. Otherwise, you could use a length of hose or pex pipe using something to slip tightly in each end with clamps. Pex and ABS usually are available by the foot at local hardware stores. http://www.homedepot.com/b/Plu...
