You wake up to leaden skies and a downpour of rain, just rain, but as the dawn lightens the grey, the clear rain becomes miraculously translucently green. The bare branches are suddenly tipped in tiny leaves opening their hands to the sky, pale greens, blue greens, mid greens, red greens, peachy greens, yellow greens, white greens greedy for the sweet smelling rain.
It is at once startling and expected as the landscape takes on the warm greens seen only in spring, only on this day when all seems new. You blink and blink again and the colors change by the minute, by the second. It is a dance of possibilities, drop by drop.
By late afternoon, the clouds begin to break up and the sun peeks out, showing the new leaves in a bold new light. The breeze dances them out and they stretch, showering a sparkle of tiny rainbows held in the heart of each scattered drop.
Tomorrow, it may rain again, but not like today, for it happens but once each year, the green rain.
