The Low-Down on Pulling Thistles

Sometimes, you find yourself bare handed in the garden and just have to yank out a thistle. Don't get hurt!

Did you know that near and below the soil line, there are no prickers on the stem? Pulling from the base of the stem also gives you the best chance of getting the roots up. That said, thistles are one weed that can stubbornly persist and multiply if you don't use an herbicide to kill the entire root. But at least you can discourage them, with or without gloves!
