A Peek into the "Lasagna Method"

Posted by @ge1836 on
I call it the Lasagna Garden. I started it in March 2009, not realizing it needed a year for the newspaper and compost to cure and decompose the sod beneath. This new garden is 35 feet long and 25 feet wide.

It began with these posts laid out for the edge of the garden in March 2009.

Then a layer of newspaper and mulch was added.

After months of the soil settling, I staked out areas for irises and other perennials.

Bulbs were planted in fall 2009.

Here is the filled in garden in June 2010.

I recommend beginning your new bed at least one season before you want to plant it, especially if you have heavy clay soil as it can take a bit longer for the amendments to decompose.
