When taking long cuttings that can be cut smaller, I use a marker to mark the top. The mark will not hurt the cutting.

When propagating plants using cuttings, it is important to stick the bottom of the cutting in the soil. Sometimes when long cuttings are divided into smaller ones, it can get confusing trying to remember which side goes up. I make an up arrow pointing to the top before making the additional cuts. That way I know for sure which way is up.
