The Garden Media Group surveyed breeders, garden editors, researchers, and retailers in the gardening industry to see what they thought the new trends would be this year. While trends in container gardening, vertical gardening, and environmentally sensitive gardening still top the long term trends, other new trends are emerging in 2005.
Gone are the days of the million dollar dream gardens. Now home gardeners want personalized, signature gardens that reflect who they are. These gardens are places or beauty and functionality. They are a place to entertain family and friends.
Along with the need to personalize their landscape, homeowners are still crunched for time. Often homeowners have more money than time so they are looking for finished plants, containers, and accessories. They want the completed landscape and they want it now. Homeowners are looking for experts to narrow the choices and provide a luxury brand that will look good immediately. Bargain brands and common bedding plants are giving way to specialty items.
Another trend is the use of tropical plants not only in the garden, but indoors as well. With the explosion of interest in 3 and 4 season sunrooms and patio rooms, homeowners are decorating their new spaces with greenery. Common houseplants such as ferns and palms are gracing these new spaces.
