National Gardening Association Announces Container Gardening Boom

South Burlington, Vermont (March 2004) - The National Gardening Association, the nonprofit organization providing market research services to the lawn and garden industry for more than 20 years, is pleased to share some exciting news: container gardening is on a roll! Over the last 5 years, the number of container gardeners has more than doubled, reaching an all-time high of 26 million participating households.

Why all the interest in container gardening? Flower-filled containers are perfect for the modern time- and space-strapped gardener. They add color to patios, decks, and other areas where flowerbeds just aren't possible. With new varieties introduced every year, the plant choices are endless, plus the expanding array of self-watering pots makes it easier than ever to create colorful, lush container gardens.

'There are myriad possible plant combinations that home gardeners can use to create exciting container displays,' says Charlie Nardozzi, senior horticulturist for the National Gardening Association (NGA). Here are some of his suggestions using new introductions from Simply Beautiful® that are available at garden centers nationwide:

  • 'Jungle Gold' impatiens - with its yellow, orchid-like flowers - looks great planted with 'Wizard Golden' coleus and 'Tango' New Guinea impatiens
  • 'Luna Red' dwarf hibiscus, which features 8-inch-diameter red flowers, is a good companion to 'Easy Wave' white petunias The large, white-flowered Abunda Giant
  • White bacopa combines well with yellow-orange 'Sunny' thunbergia and red-flowered 'Lucky' lantana
