The 2010 Subaru Healthy Sprouts Award
So. Burlington, VT (June 30, 2010) The National Gardening Association (NGA) is pleased to announce the 2010 Subaru Healthy Sprouts Award Program. Funded by a generous grant from Subaru of America Inc., thirty schools will be selected to receive NGA's ″Eat a Rainbow Kit, a literature package and $500 in materials and funding to lay the foundation for their garden program.
″This program is a wonderful extension of our focus on education and environmental programs for young people,″ stated Sandra Capell, Subaru of America community services manager. ″Encouraging children to get their hands dirty helps them explore our natural world and see first-hand how their activities impact them and their community.″
″There is no doubt that gardens are powerful educational tools, providing opportunities for children to experience the natural world as they develop academic skills and gain first-hand knowledge that leads to healthy and sustainable lifestyles,″ says Mike Metallo, president of the National Gardening Association. ″Subaru recognizes that everyone has a responsibility to provide opportunities for young people that engage them with nature. Working with NGA, it is Subaru's hope that these school gardening programs can help children understand where their food comes from, what impact their decisions have on the world's resources and on the world's ecosystems.
The Subaru Healthy Sprouts Award recognizes and supports youth gardening programs focused on teaching about our environment, nutrition and hunger issues in the United States. Through winning programs, youth will learn the skills necessary to maintain a healthy lifestyle compatible with environmental stewardship and gain an understanding of how their actions can positively impact the well being of their community.
Applications must be postmarked by October 1, 2010, and award winners will be announced by November 30, 2010. For full details and to download an application, please visit http://www.kidsgardening.org/grants.asp
