Understanding Companion Planting
Companion planting is the practice of growing certain plants together because they benefit each other when planted in close proximity. The concept has been used for centuries in traditional agricultural communities, and it remains popular among home gardeners today.
However, the reality is more nuanced than folklore suggests. While many companion planting combinations found in gardening books and online are based on personal experience and anecdotal evidence, modern scientific research has disproven the effectiveness of many popular pairings. For example, marigolds are often recommended as a catch-all pest deterrent, but controlled studies have found limited evidence for this claim.
That said, certain aspects of companion planting are well understood and scientifically documented. These mechanisms provide real, measurable benefits when used strategically in your garden. The key is knowing which techniques actually work and why.
Proven Mechanisms for Companion Success
Nitrogen Fixation by Legumes
One of the most reliable benefits comes from planting legumes (beans and peas) near other crops. Legumes host bacteria on their roots that convert atmospheric nitrogen into a form plants can use. This nitrogen enriches the soil, benefiting neighboring crops that need it for growth.
The classic example is the Three Sisters Garden, in which corn and squash benefit from nitrogen fixed by beans. After beans grow, their root residues decompose in the soil, continuing to add nitrogen in succeeding seasons.

Different plants have different root depths and growth habits. By pairing plants strategically, you can use the same space more efficiently.
Interplanting is a proven technique that matches slow-growing, large crops with faster-growing, smaller crops. The slow crop requires wide spacing between plants to accommodate its eventual size, but fast-growing crops can mature in the spaces between before the larger plants shade them out. Examples include:

Spinach and Tomatoes: Spinach is a cool-season crop that matures quickly. Plant it between tomato plants, and it will finish growing before the tomatoes get large enough to shade it out. This same principle works for other greens (lettuce, Swiss chard, mesclun) interplanted with slow-maturing crops like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, tomatoes, peppers, and eggplant.

Radish and Carrots: Plant radishes directly in with carrot seed. Radishes germinate and mature first, helping break up the soil for carrots and naturally thinning the carrot stand as you harvest them.

Shallow and Deep Root Systems: Plants with different root depths can mine nutrients at different soil levels without competing. Shallow-rooted onions grow well near deeper-rooted parsnips and carrots, each accessing nutrients from its own zone.
Trap Crops
Trap cropping uses a plant that is especially attractive to a particular pest to lure insects away from your main crop. The pests congregate on the trap crop, where they are easier to manage.
Practical examples include:

Squash Vine Borers: Plant Blue Hubbard winter squash 3 to 4 weeks early and several feet away from pumpkins and winter squash. The borers attack the Hubbard squash first, allowing you to control them there while protecting your other squash.

Flea Beetles: Plant radishes, Chinese cabbage, and pak choi a week or so before your broccoli and eggplant seedlings. Flea beetles prefer these trap crops and, since they don't move far, you can plant them in rows beside your main crop to reduce damage.
Attracting Beneficial Insects and Pollinators
Diversity is a garden's best defense against pests. When you plant a variety of flowers and herbs alongside vegetables, you attract beneficial insects that feed on harmful pests and pollinate your crops.

Parasitic Wasps and Beneficial Predators: Certain flowers from the carrot and mint families attract parasitic wasps, which lay eggs on pest insects. Flowers like dill, cilantro, oregano, sage, and Florence fennel are excellent choices. Many gardeners grow extra dill and fennel and allow them to flower specifically to support these beneficial populations.

Legume Mulch: A research-based method developed by USDA horticulturists uses soybean or other legume mulch for fall broccoli. In early spring, plant a legume such as forage-type soybean or bush beans. In midsummer, a few days before transplanting fall broccoli seedlings, chop or mow the legumes to form a 2- to 3-inch mulch. Transplant broccoli directly into the mulch without tilling. As the mulch decomposes, it adds nitrogen and organic matter to the soil, producing healthy broccoli that requires less water, little weeding, and fewer fertilizers.
The Three Sisters: A Proven Classic
The Three Sisters Garden of corn, beans, and squash is perhaps the most famous companion planting system. Originally cultivated by Native Americans, it demonstrates companion planting principles at their best.

Why This Combination Works
When grown together in the same plot, these three plants provide each other with mutual benefits:
- Corn provides support: The tall corn stalks serve as a natural trellis for pole beans to climb.
- Beans fix nitrogen: As nitrogen-fixing legumes, beans enhance soil fertility over time as their root residues decompose.
- Squash provides living mulch: Vining squash plants shade out weeds with their large leaves, reduce water loss from the soil, and their prickly leaves can deter hungry wildlife like raccoons and deer from the corn and beans.
The Three Sisters combination is also a nutritional powerhouse, providing a balance of protein and complementary amino acids (from beans), carbohydrates (from corn), and vitamins and minerals (from squash). With culinary creativity, you can create a delicious stew from these three crops, or add other American natives like peppers for additional flavor.
How to Grow the Three Sisters
Timing: All three crops are warmth lovers. Wait until all danger of frost has passed and the soil is warm before planting. While squash seeds can be started indoors in biodegradable pots about 3 weeks before the planting date, they transplant poorly; direct seeding in warm soil typically produces better results. Corn and beans should always be direct seeded.
Soil Preparation: While beans will provide nitrogen in succeeding seasons, ensure your corn has plenty of nitrogen in the first year by mixing compost and a slow-release organic fertilizer into the soil before planting.
Planting Layout: There are no hard and fast rules, so feel free to experiment. One successful plan alternates hills of squash plants with hills of combined corn and beans:
- Create a mound of soil 10 inches high and 3 feet in diameter.
- Plant 8 corn seeds in a 6-inch square on the flattened top of the mound, 2 seeds at each corner. Space these hills about 5 feet apart in the row, with 5 feet between rows.
- Thin seedlings to the four strongest, leaving one in each corner.
- When young corn plants are about 4 inches tall (roughly 2 weeks after planting), sow 6 pole bean seeds in a circle 6 inches away from the corn plants. Thin to 4 plants.
- At the same time you plant beans, plant hills of squash in between the corn-bean hills. Plant 4 seeds per hill and thin to the 2 strongest seedlings.
- Direct your young bean seedlings to the base of the corn stalks as plants grow. Once started, the beans will continue to climb on their own.
- Include at least 4 rows in your planting to ensure good wind pollination of the corn.
Maintenance: The squash leaves will shade out weeds as they grow, but keep weeds cleared around young plants. Spread organic mulch (such as straw or weed-free hay) around plants to conserve soil moisture and reduce the likelihood of rot on squash fruits by keeping them off bare soil.
Pest Management: Common pests include squash bugs, squash vine borers, and corn earworms. Check the undersides of squash leaves for masses of shiny, oval, copper-colored squash bug eggs and crush them before they hatch. If squash vine borers are problematic in your area, grow less appealing butternut squash instead of highly attractive Hubbard types. For corn earworm, drip a few drops of vegetable oil in the tips of ears with an eyedropper as soon as silks begin to brown. Keep beans disease-free by avoiding working in the garden when plants are wet.
Variety Suggestions
Successful Three Sisters gardens use proven varieties:
Pole Beans:
- 'Blue Lake FM1K' (63 days): sets dark green, straight, 6-inch, stringless pods from base to top.
- 'Kentucky Wonder' (65 days): widely adapted, excellent for home gardens, cans and freezes well.
- 'Christmas' pole lima bean (88 days): red-speckled beans can be used at green shell stage or dried; turn pinkish-brown when cooked.
Winter Squash:
- 'Acorn or Table Queen' (80 days): dark greenish-black skin with pale orange, tender, sweet, dry flesh.
- 'Pink Banana Jumbo' (105 days): banana-shaped, grayish-green rind turns pink at maturity; light orange, thick, fine-grained flesh with sweet flavor.
Corn:
- 'Pencil Cob' (100 days): open-pollinated variety growing 5 to 6 feet tall with 2 to 3 ears per stalk. Ears are surrounded by a thick, tight shuck that protects against insects.
Plant Guilds: Beyond the Three Sisters
A guild is a miniature, self-sufficient plant community where each member provides functions that benefit the whole. The goal is to create a garden that requires minimal ongoing maintenance or resource inputs.
A typical guild includes:
Centerpiece: The primary plant around which the guild is built. This might be a fruit tree, a walnut or oak tree, or a stand of asparagus. In some guilds, the centerpiece is not the primary purpose; the Three Sisters, for example, has no single centerpiece.
Ground Covers: Plants that suppress grasses and weeds, which compete for resources. Daffodils, garlic chives, camas, and strawberries work well around trees. Many have added benefits: daffodils repel deer, while strawberries provide edible fruit.
Mulch Plants: Plants grown specifically to be cut down and used as mulch on-site. Comfrey, sunroots, and lamb's quarters produce abundant foliage that can be "chopped and dropped" right where they grow.
Nutrient Accumulators: Deep-rooted plants that mine nutrients from lower soil layers and bring them to their leaves, making nutrients available to neighboring plants. Examples include chicory, dandelion, yarrow, plantain, borage, and sunroots. When combined with mulching, nutrient accumulators create powerful soil improvement.
Nitrogen Fixers: Legumes and some other plants that host bacteria enabling nitrogen fixation. These are essential components of any productive guild.
Pollinator-Attracting Plants: Bee balm, fennel, dill, and borage attract pollinators essential for fruit production.
Pest-Repelling Plants: Nasturtiums and certain marigolds confuse or repel pests and should be included in nearly every garden guild.
Additional Companion Pairings
While many traditional "good neighbor" charts lack scientific support, certain combinations have shown promise based on research and repeated observation:
- Asparagus with Tomato, Parsley, and Basil: These combinations can work in the same bed.
- Carrots with English Peas, Lettuce, Onion Family, Rosemary, and Sage: These complement each other without significant competition.
- Cucumber with Beans, Corn, English Peas, Sunflowers, and Radish: Interplanting these provides space efficiency and pest management benefits.
- Onion Family with Beets, Carrots, Lettuce, and Cabbage Family: Compatible nutrient needs and root depths.
These pairings work because of one or more of the mechanisms described earlier (nitrogen fixation, space sharing, pest management, or beneficial insect attraction) rather than mysterious chemical relationships.
Moving Forward: The Diversity Advantage
The most consistent finding from research on companion planting is straightforward: garden diversity reduces pest problems. When you grow a variety of plants, flowers, and herbs together, you create a more resilient ecosystem. This diversity supports beneficial insects, confuses pests, and stabilizes soil health.
Forget rigid rules and charts of "good" and "bad" companions. Instead, focus on the proven mechanisms: use legumes to fix nitrogen, match plants with different growth rates and root depths, employ trap crops where pests are problematic, and plant flowers to attract beneficials and pollinators.
