The Q&A Archives: Gourds in New Mexico

Questioner's Location: Albuquerque, NM
Date: February 4, 1999

Question: I would like to plant some hard shell gourds to climb and shade the west side of my house in summer. What type would you suggest.

Answer: Most gourds are vigorous enough for the task. However, you may want to choose one of the smaller fruited types such as the luffa sponge gourde or a small to medium size dipper gourd. This way the fruit won't be so heavy that it would pull the vine off of its support.

Thanks for the question!
