Answer: Japanese beetles are very difficult to battle. Luckily, although the damage can be unsightly they do not usually kill the plant. The beetles can be handpicked and dropped into soapy water, the plants can be treated with neem oil based spray which seems to act as a repellent, or as a last resort you can fight them with a product containing carbaryl such as Sevin. Be sure to read and follow all the label instructions carefully especially if you plan to eat the plums; also avoid spraying when the bees are active.
