The Q&A Archives: Forgot to Plant Dahlias

Questioner's Location: State College, PA
Date: August 21, 2000

Question: I just found some dahlia bulbs that I forgot to plant in the spring. Should I plant them now or hold them over the winter?

Answer: Unfortunately the dahlia tubers are not likely to survive until next spring without being planted, so your best bet is to plant them now. They may produce some flowers before cold weather hits and they die back. They will then need to be lifted and stored for the winter.
