The Q&A Archives: Tree and shrub longevity

Questioner's Location: San Francisco, CA
Date: October 10, 2005

Question: Hello,

What is the estimated longevity (total plant life) of these plants:

Spirea x bumalda
Grevillea x 'Noell'
Acer negundo 'Flamingo'

Thank you

Answer: In general terms, plant lifespan has as much to do with growing conditions as it does with genetics. Plant lifespans are listed as short, moderate or long: short = 20-30 years, Moderate = 30-50 years, Long > 50 years. Spirea has a long lifespan; Acer negundo has a short lifespan; Grevillea has a moderate lifspan.
