The Q&A Archives: Cutting Back Hibiscus in Zone 9 (TX)

Date: October 26, 1997

Question: I have two Hibiscus plants that I think survived a few freezes and an ice storm. My question is, when should I cut back all the dead wood? Is March too soon in zone 9? Thank you. Susan Roger La Porte, TX

Answer: If you think the wood is dead, it has no new growth on it and there's new growth on other wood, then cut away in March. If there's hope for new growth or if you cut and see green tissue, then wait a few more weeks and maybe it'll still sprout green growth. Keep it well watered and give it a shot of liquid fertilizer to stimulate new growth.
