Oddball cactus with long, exaggerated tubercles that look like leaves (thus the common name). From the Chihuahuan Desert, with a substantial taproot. Tubercles may grow to about 4-5 inches long, each bearing weak spines at its tip. Flowers are large, fragrant, and yellow. Widespread but uncommon in habitat and uncommon in cultivation. A staple of botanical gardens. Slow growing. Allow extra space in containers for the tap root. Best form with strong light. Provide excellent drainage and do not overwater.

Found in 6 different states in north-central Mexico. Apparently associated with Ferocactus; intergeneric hybrids exist and are called xFerobergia.
