Duranta erecta is named after the papal physician and botanist Castore Durante. He lived in Rome during the latter half of the 15th century.
Sapphire refers to the blue color, as in the gemstone, and the "showers" refers to the flowering branches that tend to hang down at the ends from the concentration of blooms and fruit so situated.
The "golden dew drop" common name is from the yellow drupe that follows the flowers. A drupe has a soft, fleshy skin surrounding a hard nut or stone wherein dwells the seed.
I have successfully grown this plant trained as a small tree in a quite large pot. It is overwintered in the basement under fluorescent lights. The plant may lose 50 to 75% of its leaves during the winter but swiftly re-leafs when set in the sun in late spring.
It attracts bees, butterflies, and moths throughout the summer and into the fall.
