This species is native to Europe and northwest Africa in moist habitats of rich soil. The fuzzy yellow flowers have a sweet fragrance. It is clump that spreads slowly with rhizomes. The foliage is usually about 3 feet high and the flower stalks reach to 5 feet. Actually, the specimen I took photos of at the North Creek Nursery demonstration garden is the glaucum variety that is native just to Spain and northwest Africa, having a more blue-green foliage colour.
