Low-growing, dark green to reddish brown aloe from Madagascar with bright red flowers. Leaves may have numerous pale spots or streaks, and they may look like they are bleached by the sun, even when they're not (though the plant grows in shade in habitat). Inflorescences are about 5-7 inches tall and usually unbranched, with short, lax cylindrical racemes. Flowers have green tips. This is a member of the Lomatophyllum group and it makes an indehiscent berry instead of the usual dry, dehiscent aloe fruit. The inside of the fruit is incredibly slimy. This species absorbed 3 others in 2004 (ankaranensis, propagulifera, zombitsiensis) but the first 2 appear to be separate again. All of these plants may produce bulbils and all are self fertile.
