This rose is one of the stars of my garden in May and June. It can climb as high as 20 feet, and its canes stay pliable for a long time, so it can be wound around pillars or trained on tellises and arbors quite easily -- extremely easily, in fact, because it is not a thorny rose. The large clusters of small cupped blooms start out a bluish-purple and gradually fade to lavender and silver. It is a once-bloomer, but many once-bloomers occasionally rebloom in my zone if they are pruned soon after the blooming stage has been completed. Veilchenblau has a second bloom cycle about once every three years in my garden. The rebloom is sparse but nevertheless quite welcome.

I wanted Veilchenblau to climb up my old dwarf cherry tree, but it only got about 7 feet tall and never any taller. Last year's canes always have heavy die off during winters, so instead of growing tall, it has to put out new ones from nearer the base and just can't get much height. Still, it is glorious in bloom each spring. A most unusual, small-flowered, purple bloom. Once-flowering in the spring only. The only once-flowering rose in my garden.

Noted by
Antique Rose Emporium:
"Often called The Blue Rose, this vigorous, nearly thornless rambler has small crimson or purple blossoms that fade to a grey-blue color. Although literature indicates a tendency to rebloom, we have not witnessed this occurrence. Seen up close, there are streaks of white in each flower and the gold stamens are brightly displayed. Fragrance is excellent."
