"Most kinds of Daylilies occur as clumps, each of which has leaves, a crown, flowers, and roots. The long, linear lanceolate leaves are grouped into opposite fans with arching leaves. The crown is the small white portion between the leaves and the roots. Along the scape of some kinds of daylilies, small leafy "proliferations" form at nodes or in bracts. A proliferation forms roots when planted and is often an exact clone of its parent plant. Many kinds of daylilies have thickened roots in which they store food and water.

A normal, single daylily flower has three petals and three sepals, collectively called tepals, each with a midrib in the same or in a contrasting color. The centermost part of the flower, called the throat, usually has a different color than more distal areas of its tepals. Each flower usually has six stamens, each with a two-lobed anther. After successful pollination, a flower forms a capsule (often erroneously called a pod).

The daylily is often called "the perfect perennial," due to its dazzling colors, ability to tolerate drought, capability to thrive in many zones, and requiring very little care. Daylilies thrive in full sun, although certain daylilies require partial shade, depending on color. Lighter shades, such as yellow, pink, and pastels require the sun to bring out all of their color. Darker daylilies, such as some red and purple flowers, need shade because their darker colors absorb heat."

I can not imagine my garden without daylilies. They are the stars and the backbone of my summer garden. Colors and flower forms to suit everyone's taste.

    Hello...

I am looking for information about the truth regarding the toxicity of Hemerocallis Fulva or true day lilies. to cats There is confusion about this. On the poison control site , the SPCA and at vet offices, it is posted as highly toxic, yet the photos accompanying the 'day lily' is actually a Tiger Lily,

I have read in other forums on this page (including a survey which I completed... though it was set up back in 2012 and may no longer be useful) that the lily my cat ate is not toxic, not lethal and that that particular day lily is actually not viewed in recent times as part of the lily family.

Very confused about this. ... and having spent over $500+ Canadian to get my cat treated and thoroughly traumatized by an overnight sty and intravenous fluids, follow up blood work, I will miffed if the info circulating all these years is untrue and has not been updated.

Any experiences or thoughts on this, please let me know.

    Cheers,

    Kathryn

MrsBinWY On September 18, 2021 Potted up
On 9-18-2021, potted the seedling and brought it into the house for the winter. Was worried it wouldn't make it through the winter. It only had a couple very spindly leaves, though the small roots look healthy. The whole works would have fit just fine in a 2.25" pot, but I gave it a 5" wide x 5" deep pot in hopes of it growing over the winter.
