This plant grows on the slopes of Mauna Loa and Hualalai. It is commonly known as 'kuahiwi laukahi' and is a Federally listed endangered species.

This perennial herb has a woolly stem and grows a few centimeters tall, bearing spikes of flowers. It grows in bogs and forested habitat on lava and volcanic ash substrates.
