"Salvia atropurpurea is a perennial plant that is native to Yunnan province in China, growing on grassy slopes at 11,200 feet elevation. S. atropurpurea grows on one erect stem to 20 inches tall. The leaves are ovate to broadly ovate, ranging in size from 1.4 to 4.1 inches long and approximately 0.98 to 3.5 inches wide.

Inflorescences are 2-6 flowered verticillasters in terminal racemes or panicles 2.4 to 5.9 inches, with a dark purple corolla that is 0.98 to 1.2 inches."
