The status of this species is disputed by some; hybridiser Andy Easton regards it as a natural hybrid due to its variability and suspects it has Ivory-Colored Cymbidium (Cymbidium eburneum) in its ancestry.

The RHS additionally lists this as a hybrid of unknown origin, registered in 1915 by Sanders. KEW's WCSP lists it as an accepted species, discovered in 1905.
